Overview

Pepin the Short, also known as Pepin III, was a pivotal figure in European history, serving as King of the Franks from 751 until his death in 768. As the first Carolingian to become king, he laid the foundation for the Carolingian dynasty, which would go on to shape the course of European politics, culture, and society for centuries to come. Born around 714 to Charles Martel, the Frankish prince, and his wife Rotrude, Pepin received an ecclesiastical education from the Christian monks of the Abbey Church of St. Denis, near Paris. He succeeded his father as the Mayor of the Palace in 741, alongside his older brother Carloman, and eventually became the sole ruler of the Franks after Carloman's retirement. Pepin's reign was marked by significant military campaigns, including the suppression of revolts led by the Bavarians and Aquitanians, and his coronation as king by Pope Stephen II in 754, which solidified the alliance between the Frankish monarchy and the Catholic Church. With a Vibe score of 82, Pepin the Short's legacy continues to influence European history, politics, and culture to this day.
